Places of Interest
There are many interesting places to visit around Lochaber, Ardnamurchan and the surrounding area, both on foot and by car. Below are details of some of them, but by no means all. Links to associated websites are included where known. If you come across any other links then please let me know and I will include them.
Glenfinnan - Where Bonny Prince Charlie raised his Standard at the start of the '45 campaign. Castle Tioram. - Stronghold of Clan Cameron for many centuries, now about to be restored. The Seven Men of Moidart. - Seven Oak trees planted near Kinlochmoidart to represent seven faithful supporters of Bonny Prince Charlie The Black Goats at Kingairloch. An area of outstanding beauty. The wild black goats are often seen on the shore eating seaweed. The old lead mines at Polloch. Again, fantastic scenery. The old lead mines were worked by prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars. They are also where the radioactive element Strontium 90 was discovered - hence the name! The Ariundle Nature Reserve. Native Oakland forest with a well laid out nature trail. The Strontian Forest Walk. Ardnastang Bay – at the foot of Longrigg Road. Partly sandy, partly rocky. Great for exploring, with lots of shore life. Kentra Bay – miles of deserted sands. Aird Araigh Forest Walk – Near Resipole Village, and on the shore of Loch Sunart. A good place to see Seals and Otters. The Nature Centre at Glenborrodale. - With fascinating displays and information on the wildlife and natural history of Ardnamurchan. Beinn Resipole. To walk from The Bield to the summit of Beinn Resipole takes about 3 hours. The view from the top is incredible. Mallaig - Fishing village at the end of the Road to the Isles and the departure point for the ferry to Skye. Ardnamurchan Point - The most westerly point on the British Mainland, with an interesting museum on the lighthouse. Mull & Iona - Accessible by ferry from Kilchoan or Lochaline. Iona and Tobermory are well worth a visit.
